Day 10

Waiting outside for the gift shop to open we took advantage of the picture opportunities.

Today was our first day adventuring on the Mother Road Route 66.  We stayed in Williams the past two nights which is a big part of 66 but we were tired and needed to do laundry so we officially started today.
Our first stop will be in Cool Springs Station, AZ.  In the 1850's this was discovered by the Native Americans as a life saving water source from the springs.  In the 1920's with the introduction of Route 66 and Automobiles traveling the area there was a need for a gas and water station.

All  of the information about this being a watering and gas station confuses me because there was no water or gas to be had here. They have wonderful outhouses for you to use and you are welcome to buy bottled water.

Regardless of the water/gas situation.  This is a must stop on the way to Oatman.  They have ish cool air inside the building and lots of memorabilia from 66 in its heyday.

The restrooms

This is the way to get to Oatman. It is called the Sidewinder.  191 turns in 8 miles with no guardrails.  It starts at an elevation of 1,243 ft and you go up to Site Graves pass which is an elevation of 3,595 ft then back down to 2,710 ft. When you arrive in Oatman.

We are now in the fantastic town of Oatman. The town has a population of 135 people and a few hundred burrows.  Its heyday was 1900 to the 1940's it was a gold mining town.  It even has its own Post Office.

One of the infamous burrows

We ate at the Oatman Hotel.  There are dollar bills hanging up everywhere.  We asked what the guesstimated total was and they said they are up to around $500,000.

We were super excited about trying the  Stinky Cheese Fries.  They did not disappoint!  They were french fries covered in cheddar cheese and roasted garlic. Yummy!  I do believe we will be having Stinky Cheese Chicken, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs....

Look at the top of the bill we were customer 359,887 for this year

This guy was funny they guy was trying to feed him the burrow food and was not quick enough so the burrow stole the whole bag and started to eat it and of course that was his appetizer he then began to eat the burrow chow.

This burrow said screw this I am going into the AC!  Smarter than we were.

We added to the total so now it is $500,002.

The best little Ore House in Oatman

We left Oatman and the temp was a wonderful 105 degrees.  It was toasty and we were not doing very well with the heat.  Once you started down the mountain you were committed to a minimum of a 50 mile ride to the nearest stop for relief.  We made it to Kingman and decided we no longer wanted to play on Route 66 today.  She had kicked our asses.  The top temp today was 107 degrees.  We booked a hotel called the El Travatore and we are staying in the Marylin Monroe room.  We napped for a couple of hours and then ventured into town for dinner at a 1950's diner called Mr. D'z

This hotel is a classic Route 66 hotel.  Check out all of the murals

These are a couple of pics of the inside of the room
